    4. History of the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre

The Moulin Rouge in Montmartre was opened on October 6, 1889 by two business partners, Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller. It was originally intended as a place for amusement and entertainment, where visitors could enjoy music, dancing and other forms of artistic performances. In its early years, the Moulin Rouge was best known for its cancan dancing, a lively and challenging dance style that was popular at the time. The dancers, known as “the Doriss Girls,” wowed the audience with their energetic and daring performances. The Moulin Rouge quickly became a meeting place for artists, writers and bohemians, who were inspired by the creative atmosphere of Montmartre.

During the Belle Epoque, a period of flourishing art and culture at the end of the 19th century, the Moulin Rouge became a famous site in Paris. Famous painters such as Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized the lively atmosphere of the nightclub in their works of art, bringing it to worldwide fame. However, during the First World War, the Moulin Rouge had a hard time. The building was damaged by fire and the entertainment life in Paris slowed down. Despite this, the nightclub reopened in the 1920s and regained its reputation as a leading venue for musical revues and cabaret performances. Famous artists performed at the Moulin Rouge, including Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf and Frank Sinatra, attracting a global audience.
